Buying Handmade + Local

Over the last week or so I have been sharing items from some of my favorite small business and handmade shops. My goal was to hopefully bring some of these hard working shops (mostly run by nasty nasty women) into your lives. Handmade is better for so many reasons. The sappiest reason, because we poor our heart and souls into each item. And who doesn’t want to support that. For me buying handmade just makes me feel good. It feels authentic. It feels good to support a fellow maker. The thought is when you support a locally owned independent biz, you return a higher percentage of revenue to their communities than chains. Simply put, when you buy from a local or handmade artisan/shop, they too are more likely to buy local/handmade.

Here are a couple more reasons to buy local and/or handmade.

(1) Personalization
Often times handmade goods have an option for personalization. Most times you have direct contact with the maker when buying handmade and can easily ask for minor changes or customization. Example, I offer personalized baby name blankets and hats. And the ability to customize colors, fabrics, and stitchings.

(2) Unique
The most beautiful reasons to shop handmade, because its unique and not mass produced. Fewer items made. Making it even more special. I love it when someone says, “where did you get that!” Being able to answer by promoting a handmade (or local) biz gives me the best feels.

(3) Eco-Friendly
Work done by hand takes less energy than mass produced items. Takes less machinery. Less fuel. Especially if shipped overseas. A lot of times these makers use local and organic increasing the level of green 😉

HONEST + AUTHENTIC + HANDMADE = BETTER
